Tourism in the age of terror: Mali Resort suffers suspected jihadist attack

Earlier this year, the U.S. State Department issued an alert for Mali, citing “possible future attacks on Western diplomatic missions, other locations in Bamako that Westerners frequent.” That warning proved prescient on Sunday as suspected jihadists attacked a hotel resort just outside of the capital of Bamako. The attack is the merely the latest in a string of worldwide incidents targeting resorts that are popular with foreign tourists, a fact that has raised concerns about the safety of global travel and the health of the tourist industry.
