McAfee Labs produce threat reports providing insights into malware, ransomware and other cybersecurity threats.

McAfee Labs Threats Report: June 2018

Despite a 31% decline in new malware, this quarter we saw bad actors striving to do what they do better—evolving their technologies and using new tactics to outmaneuver their targets’ defenses.

Our latest findings include:

  • A resurgence of cryptojacking: New coin miner malware surged 1,189% in Q1, and Lazarus rears its head again with campaigns identifying targets that use bitcoin software.
  • Operation GhostSecret: Uncovered by McAfee in March, this global reconnaissance campaign targeting multiple sectors could lead to bigger, more malicious attacks in the near future.
  • LNK gains prominence, while PowerShell recedes: New attacks targeting the exploitation of LNK capabilities jumped 59%, while new PowerShell attacks dropped significantly.
